Getting to the heart of the youth unemployment problem

Youth unemployment is currently at an all-time high – one in five nationally, one in four in Inner Cities. Employers and employer organisations are challenging schools and colleges to focus on workplace skills for their students, alongside academic achievement. Heart of the City has brought together a consortium of corporate and not-for-profit partners to encourage more small to medium-sized (SME) businesses to get involved in employability skills initiatives in their local schools. They approached us at Deloitte Digital to help create a website that would be at the centre of the SchoolsToBusiness initiative.

Good looking, low maintenance and easy to use

The site needed to meet the needs of both schools and businesses, while being easy to maintain and cheap to run. The look and feel of the site was created through close collaboration with the Heart of the City team and it was then built using the static site generator Jekyll, combined with the responsive Foundation framework. The site used a number of free or low cost tools, such as Google Analytics, Google Site Search and Mail Chimp. The latter allowed schools and businesses to sign up to hear more about the initiative, with auto responders delivering more information without any effort on the part of Heart of the City.

The site has been an integral part of the SchoolsToBusiness pilot and has been well received by the participants. By utilising open source, free and low cost tools it does this cheaply but without any compromise on design or performance. By taking advantage of techniques such as file compilation and compression we were able to optimise page load times. The site is also responsive, working on mobile devices for when participants need information while on the go.
